Blackbeard at one point tells James about a curse placed on him by the Odd Sisters and James sees this as a means of his re-entrance back into Never Land. Thankfully, my perseverance did pay off and the latter part of the book picked up in pace and plot enough that I started to enjoy the experience. I don't want to give too much away, but I really loved how smoothly everything fit into this background tale and how everything we eventually get to see in the animated movie has not changed one bit. Mais ça reste un roman jeunesse, les scènes d’action sont rapides et tout s’enchaîne un peu trop vite à mon sens par moments. It was a joy to read about Blackbeard, the crew’s encounter with the Kraken, James’ love for books and pirate lore, as well as his overall swashbuckling journey to villainhood.

Maybe I’d have enjoyed the stuff about the Kingdoms and Odd Sisters and all that more if I’d read the other books. Furthermore, I was slightly irritated by the world building but I can only blame myself since I didn’t read any of the previous books in the series and they’re indeed more connected than I thought they would be.
