About this deal

Our group of readers found this challenging and somewhat confusing at first, particularly as the prologue doesn’t relate to the story at all until you uncover certain details and relationships deeper into the book. He is not excited to leave his mother in Dublin battling illness; he is not excited to be stuck in his eccentric grandfather Malachy’s tiny cottage; he is not excited to share a bedroom with his annoying older sister Tara; and he is certainly not excited to ride a ferry across the same ocean that claimed the life of his courageous father before Fionn was born. Who is the Storm Keeper and why is Grandfather’s cottage filled from floor to ceiling with strange candles? Fionn’s unease only grows when he senses the powerful magic of Arranmore from the moment of his arrival, but no one had taken the time to warn him.

The Storm Keeper’s Island by Catherine Doyle | Waterstones

One relationship they all commented on was the story arc between Fionn and his older sister Tara as they move from bickering siblings to allies in the face of danger. The magic of Arranmore island is truly unique, as is the ability for Fionn and his grandfather to revisit different layers – or points in the island’s history – by burning candles made from previous Storm Keepers.A story of death, magic and the afterlife told by Marinka, who is desperate not to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps and wants to find her own destiny. As you go through the book, you learn more about the island and the Storm Keeper before a huge ending.

Doyle proves with this exquisite debut that she is a middle-grade fiction author to watch, and readers can look forward to the continuing adventures of the Storm Keeper. From the moment Fionn and Tara’s feet touch the ground on their hereditary island home of Arranmore, they are involved in a twisting, time-leaping, family mystery. After living in Dublin City for two years, Catherine is now based in Galway but spends a lot of her time in the US and London. A truly epic finale to one of the best trilogies of recent years' KIRAN MILLWOOD-HARGRAVE'Magical in every way' EOIN CO.

It’s Fionn’s first visit, and not only has Tara kept loads of information from Fionn, she abandons him with their grandfather pretty much from the moment they arrive. She loves reading aloud with her family and traveling, and prefers to do both simultaneously as often as possible. Prepare to enter a magical, sweep-you-off-your-feet world with this incredible award-winning middle grade series, perfect for fans of Harry Potter , How To Train Your Dragon and breathtaking fantasy adventure readers.
