What sets Goslings Rum apart from other rums on the market is its unique blend of aged rums from various Caribbean countries. The black rum is poured gently over the ginger beer to create a layered effect that resembles dark clouds looming over the sea.
The Goslings started formulating rum blends in 1860, and in three years, they had developed Old Rum, a dark, full-bodied rum. Goslings is the island’s oldest business and has been a staple of Bermudian culture since it was founded by James Gosling in 1806. Taking a whiff from the glass, the spirit smells pretty much exactly like you’d expect from a good rum. A nod to this history can be found today with the premium expression Family Reserve Old Rum, an extra-aged spirit that is bottled in a black wax-sealed Champagne bottle much like the days of old. It provides the right balance of depth and character that appeals to both novices and spirits aficionados.
I’m a little sad that this no longer comes in a secondhand champagne bottle with a black wax sealed stopper (and this honestly feels like a missed marketing opportunity). There’s a bright note in here that I don’t see elsewhere, like a bit of lime or citrus fruit shining through. Crushed ice is used to balance out the heavy Gosling's Rum, making for a boozy and delicious cocktail. This extremely limited expression is aged for more than 15 years in the balmy Bermuda climate, with production limited to just 12 barrels annually.
