It is definitely written to an audience of teachers but I have already used things I learned as a parent. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this book is its personal touch--reading it is like having a conversation with the authors about robust vocabulary instruction. And don't assume they can figure words out from context - context is often unclear or even misleading. Coverage includes criteria for selecting words for instruction, ways of introducing new vocabulary, developing vocabulary activities, using natural contexts to derive word meanings, and techniques for creating a rich verbal environment in the classroom. I loved the ideas of strategies to use in the classroom to have students interact with vocabulary words and how they could be applied with any story.

The second edition is even better than the first--it addresses recent issues such as the Common Core and RTI; provides a greater number of helpful, practical examples; addresses vocabulary and writing; takes on the challenge of providing effective vocabulary instruction for struggling readers and English learners; and offers guidance for teaching math, science, and social studies vocabulary in the intermediate grades.

At the end of the book, the reader is rewarded with a menu of instructional activities and a study guide. Maybe it’s because I read ‘Word Nerds’ right before this one, but I had a hard time focusing on this. Interesting, precise analysis of which words we should teach - and why we must overtly help students expand their vocabularies. Teachers are guided in selecting words for instruction; developing student-friendly explanations of new words; creating meaningful learning activities; and getting students involved in thinking about, using, and noticing new words both within and outside the classroom.
