About this deal

The first known musical reference to Daleks is the 1964 novelty single "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas with a Dalek" by the Go-Go's, released during the 1960s' " Dalekmania" fad. [135] Despite its title, the Daleks are notably absent from this boxset, other than in a passing cameo. Instead, we get a slice of the universe around them, inspired by the works of their (real world) creator; Mechanoids and SSS agents hail from the action-oriented adventures the Doctor enjoyed when Terry Nation wrote the stories. Interestingly, it is a setting that suits the Tenth Doctor well – both on a nostalgic level and also allowing him to play the action hero too.

Dalek society is depicted as one of extreme scientific and technological advancement; the Third Doctor states that "it was their inventive genius that made them one of the greatest powers in the universe." [101] However, their reliance on logic and machinery is also a strategic weakness which they recognise, [44] [47] and thus use more emotion-driven species as agents to compensate for these shortcomings. [44] [45] [98] Later versions of the prop had more efficient wheels and were once again simply propelled by the seated operators' feet, but they remained so heavy that when going up ramps they often had to be pushed by stagehands out of camera shot. The difficulty of operating all the prop's parts at once contributed to the occasionally jerky Dalek movements. [36] This problem has largely been eradicated with the advent of the "new series" version, as its remotely controlled dome and eyestalk allow the operator to concentrate on the smooth movement of the Dalek and its arms. BFI TV Classics: Doctor Who. London: British Film Institute. ISBN 1-84457-090-8.Abducted by an unknown force, the Doctor finds himself in need of allies. Enter SSS Agents Anya Kingdom (Jane Slavin) and Mark Seven (Joe Sims), both of whom who have encountered the Time Lord before, albeit in an earlier incarnation. Surviving their first encounter on an alien planet, the trio soon head for Earth; all roads lead to the launch of Sheldrake Industries’ commercial time tunnels which the Doctor is sure must be stopped! To be honest, the plans for commercial time travel and its launch play second fiddle to the characters here. We have heard, or seen, the idea of ‘all of time happening at once’ before. Here, at least, it is delivered in some detail though, allowing Mark Seven to demonstrate his worth. What is Dalek Universe? Well it is the first full season of Doctor Who adventures starring David Tennant as the Doctor in over ten years. It is also a huge celebration of the work and imagination of Terry Nation.

a b Writer Terry Nation, Director Christopher Barry, Producer Verity Lambert (4 January 1964). " The Escape". Doctor Who. London. BBC. The Lost starts off like it’s a legend being told. The style draws listeners in immediately, even while you may still be reeling from the end of The Trojan Dalek. It sets the tone for the dream-like atmosphere of this story. The team finds themselves trapped in a bubble dimension full of fairy-tale architecture. There’s a surreal quality surrounding their whole situation that is both eerie and entrancing. a b c d e Writer Russell T Davies, Director Joe Ahearne, Executive Producers Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Mal Young (18 June 2005). "The Parting of the Ways". Doctor Who. Cardiff. BBC. BBC One.After Mark starts behaving oddly, the Doctor and Anya find themselves on a strange planet with their friend missing. Searching for him they find their way to an isolated research base. The corridors show signs of animal incursions and the scientists are behaving strangely. But a big surprise is waiting for them. In April next year, David Tennant will return as the Tenth Doctor for a monumental new full-cast Doctor Who audio drama series from Big Finish Productions. As the human mission concludes, it coincides with an attempt by a group of indigenous warriors to reclaim their planet. Installing a new beacon on the ruins of their city, the TARDIS again falls victim to its power drain… That way leads to death! In a British Government Parliamentary Debate in the House of Commons on 12 February 1968, the then Minister of Technology Tony Benn mentioned the Daleks during a reply to a question from the Labour MP Hugh Jenkins concerning the Concorde aircraft project. In the context of the dangers of solar flares, he said, "Because we are exploring the frontiers of technology, some people think Concorde will be avoiding solar flares like Dr. Who avoiding Daleks. It is not like this at all." [147] [148]

Three of Davros' Daleks used a device called the Progenitor to successfully spawn a new Dalek paradigm ("Victory of the Daleks"), and it was not long before a new Dalek Empire spanned the stars, even allying with other races in an alliance to trap the Eleventh Doctor ("The Pandorica Opens"). They rebuilt Skaro, and the Doctor first got a real sense of the scale of their new empire when they ensnared him to send him on a mission to the Dalek Asylum ("Asylum of the Daleks"). When the Daleks realized the Time Lords may be about to return, they laid siege to Trenzalore to prevent it, along with many other races ("The Time of the Doctor"). Writer Ben Aaronovitch, Director Andrew Morgan, Producer John Nathan-Turner (19 October 1988). " Remembrance of the Daleks, Part Three". Doctor Who. London. BBC. BBC1.

There are Daleks and Davros and Movellans and River Song in the mix, loads of action… and yet, as with all great Doctor Who, it’s about people. About emotions. And two friends who have travelled through the Dalek Universe together now facing the endgame.” a b Writer Russell T Davies, Director Graeme Harper, Producer Phil Collinson (5 July 2008). " Journey's End". Doctor Who. Cardiff. BBC. BBC One. These scenes in particular are a treat, for listeners new or familiar to Anya, as Jane Slavin adds a subtle but increasingly emotional performance as the story goes on, and her interrogation of the Doctor without facing him is also supported by a brilliant music score.
