About this deal

Before buying any lawn feed, you may wish to measure your lawn so that you can find out how many m² it is. This way, you can work out how much product to buy, and how many applications it will last for.

To a degree yes. Ferrous sulphate though classified as either a moss killer or fertiliser is in fact just an iron salt. It is the equivalent of a vitamin to you and me and is the reason you may eat spinach because it contains a lot of iron in the green leaves. The more iron the greener it gets, so introducing iron into the lawn greens it up but does not feed or promote growth. If you want to really green up your lawn then mix ferrous sulphate with liquid fertiliser! That said, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to have a supply of both. That way, you can apply lawn feed + weed killer twice a year, but keep the grass topped up with lawn feed the rest of the time. Choosing Liquid or Granular Formulas

It’s extremely powerful so be sure to use it with caution and experiment with the lowest measurement first: use 1 to 2 grams per litre of water per square metre of lawn and apply with a sprayer for better coverage. Personally, I recommend using it once per year, when the weather is cool, wet and you’re looking for growth. Other than that, it’s best to weed THEN feed with a fertiliser specific for the time of year needed. How to apply weed and feed using a spreader I go into more detail about spreaders in my article – How, why & when to sow grass seed. There are a few different types of spreader you can buy. If your lawn is over 150m2, then I’d suggest investing in a spreader with wheels. Whether you're struggling to control moss, weeds or both, there's a lawn treatment that can help, but they don't all do an excellent job. Some will work wonders for your grass (but not make a dent in the weeds and moss), while others do a better job at controlling weeds.

Conditions for feeding a lawn

If you’ve got a large area of grass to cover, it can wind up being pretty expensive to buy several bags of lawn feed. Fortunately, products like the GREENFORCE 4-in-1 Lawn Feed, Weed, Moss Killer offer great value for money, with one 15 kg bag providing enough to cover an area of up to 750 m² (that’s 3 tennis courts!).

Phosphorus (or phosphate) helps with root development, as strong roots mean less disease and fewer pests. It’s best applied in early spring or autumn. In mid-spring (late March to April), when the soil is moist or when rain is expected, you can feed your lawn with a product that contains weed and moss control. It will kill off any moss that’s grown over winter, and help accelerate grass growth after the cold months. Once the weeds are under control, it’s fine to use a lawn feed that solely feeds the grass. There’s not much you can do during this season. However, try to give it a rest by avoiding walking on your lawn, when it is wet or frozen, as this can harm the fragile grass. Put boards down if you are wheeling any heavy loads over it. In fact, this fertiliser has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society which goes a long way to demonstrate both its quality and reputation. In terms of moss, within two weeks of applying the product, the moss will have died and be ready to rake. As with all moss killers, this may result in some sparse patches directly after raking; however, grass will soon spread into bare areas. For smaller gardens, this Vitax Green Up Liquid Lawn Feed works well to ‘green up’ the lawn whilst eliminating smaller weeds.

It’s a product that helps preserve the natural appearance of the lawn, for those gardeners who like having daisies and clover poking through as well. Miracle-Gro EverGreen improves the health of the grass but doesn’t contain any weed killing properties. In summary, if 'Weed and Feed' worked reliably and consistently, professionals would use it and we would sell it! Nitrogen aids with leaf growth, resulting in a deep green colour when your lawn is happiest. Nitrogen-heavy lawn feeds are best applied when grass puts out new growth, so in the spring and summer.

This is a traditional treatment for mossy lawns and was one of the best products in this trial. The quality and colour of the grass was improved after the first application, and after a couple of treatments the moss was fully under control and significantly reduced across the lawn.
