About this deal

Another is Pelham Blue which is used by Gibson and has been favoured by players such as Dave Grohl on his ES-335. He noted that it's not meant to be played in one day, neither songs separately, as far the thread can be followed, but nevertheless it should be enjoyed in the prolonged period of time. I have the Blue box set, and as you'd expect from that many songs in one place at one time, it's a mix of awesome, really good, a bit mediocre and a handful of fillers. If so inspired, playing over 10 hours of this music straight through keeps the mind focused because each song is fascinating in its own right. Complete your blue guitar with a matching blue guitar strap or add some colour with a patterned strap, red strap or a green strap.

To get all the greatest builders together and have them interpret the same guitar, an 18-inch archtop, in the same color blue that Jimmy had used. The project culminated in an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute (I attended the event) and a corresponding book.Chris Rea then took the project in his own hands, dedicated to bring it into the world as no-one else would do it, together with a handful of dedicated top musicians. Modern replicas of the vintage '60s Burns design units that are so fundamental to the Red Special's powerful sonic character, the three series-wired, single-coil pickups feature the same retro-styling and magnet alignment as the originals.

One would expect that such an overabundance produced over a compacted period would no doubt end up being terribly repetitive in both scores and lyrics. As well as fulfilling everything you need on the sound and playability fronts, you have to look the part too. With the light string gauge and easy playability high up the fretboard, playing the Bo' Rhap solo was a very joyous experience! I love that guitar, its pickups, amazing ergonomics and super fast neck (I’m not a super fast player though). I used to find the same if I bought more than 1 album at once - my attention would be split and I wouldn't get into either one as much as I might have if bought at different times.

He just wanted to get down on record the variety of blues that he enjoyed, hence the different styles per disc. Three pickups may not be that unusual but two sets of switches certainly are (white here, same colour as on Brian's red special); the higher placed set turns the pickup on/off and the lower set is for in/out phase reversal. The 120 songs composed and arranged and recorded by Chris Rea with his friends are so authentic and deeply felt, it is a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' like nothing else. Chinery intended the project to be an homage both to D-Aquisto and to the artistry of the archtop guitar. When the originally African and South-influenced Blues were brought to Louisiana, New Orleans, the Mississippi Delta, new instruments were added – clarinet, brass, piano, mandolins, accordions – and along with the banjo mingled into an interesting mix, which would be known as New Orleans, Swamp, Cajun or Riverboat Blues. The collection is a tribute to the masterful archtop luthier Jimmy D'Aquisto whose Blue Centura had been the inspiration behind the concept of a group of guitars from the finest builders alive at the time - given free creative reign - aside from some universal specifications - they just had to be blue.

From Chris' first guitar, a 28 British Pound Hofner Solid to a blue '62 Strat and various dobros back to a forefather of the guitar, the banjo and even farther back in time, to the kora, Rea even steps outside stylistic periods and adds a Fender Remolux and Supra Baby to let the song rather than style or period dictate the arrangement. The variety and uniqueness on offer here make this an outstanding recording guitar when you've run out of options on your usual guitar collection. It was a tremendous change in the way, the Blues could be approached, fine and subtle figures and fine chord structures could suddenly be played, the Blues was rising to previously unbeknown heights: "Now I can play above the bar noise, Man I'm bigger than a crowd" as Rea states in the opener "Electric Guitar", which paraphrases what musicians must have felt after this milestone revolution. If you've found open string chords like A major a bit of a squeeze on a standard electric, you'll love the room two extra millimetres affords here.

A bit of a shame that most people just know him for 'driving home for Xmas', as he is actually a master of the instrument and just became a bit derivative with the sounds that made money. When the other band members study their scores, Rea works on paintings that will serve as album covers.
