About this deal

It is a richly illustrated guide to the wonderful healing mysteries of the common plants we may overlook when admiring our carefully cultivated garden roses, lilac or rhododendron blooms … Having read this book I find I walk in the countryside with new eyes and a far keener sense of observation, nibbling leaves and gathering seeds as I go. They've done it again! I was slightly worried that this book wouldn't be as good as Hedgerow Medicine – a book I wouldn't be without. But it is ... full of plants that are not known as well these days medicinally (whereas Hedgerow Medicine is) but fascinating – full of facts from the past as well as up to date scientific research, recipes and great photos. Julie and Matthew complement each other fabulously in this book – highly recommended to the lay person and professional alike. ***

This has been one of the most inspiring, interesting, useful and comforting classes I’ve ever done. Thank you both so much (2016) I was told about this book regarding a remedy for cystitis: couch grass (which worked in 2 days). I can't recommend this book enough. It’s the best book I have found. Very easy to follow, pictures, how to use the plants etc. I have been out nearly every day finding the plants. A must-have if you are serious in using natural plants for healing. *** Julie is also an artist, photographer, film-maker, graphic designer, writer and silver jeweller. She co-authored the vegetarian cookbook Vegetarian Masterpieces. Her photographs have been widely published in books and magazines, including National Geographic, and she has worked as a wildlife illustrator and artist, holding a number of exhibitions. She illustrated the children’s book When Elephant Was King.

What a lovely day! Thanks so much for sharing it with us all. I am going home to distill yarrow now! (2022) Julie and Matthew have written six books together, all published by Merlin Unwin Books: Hedgerow Medicine (2008), Kitchen Medicine (2010), Make Your Own Aphrodisiacs (2012), The Herbalist’s Bible (2014), Wayside Medicine (2017) and Eat your Weeds! (2022). All have been published in North America (sometimes under different titles). My absolute herbal inspiration nowadays is Julie and Matthew's wonderful book, Hedgerow Medicine, which to my mind is the best home-use British herbal that has ever been written - such a beautiful, inspiring and empowering book! This book offers a practical insight into the medicinal uses of local plants, showing clearly that we have our own medicine chest right on our doorstep – all we have to do is step outside! An exploration of the uses of herbs and learn to make your own top quality cosmetics and herbal preparations. Includes ID, growing, harvesting from my organic garden, drying and storing herbs.

Wayside Medicine

Hedgerow Medicine is a wonderful book that all herbalists need. It embodies a heartfelt love of herbalism combined with clearly articulated scientific insights. I plan to get some schools here [California] using it and will promote it as much as possible.

This week has surpassed all my expectations! An experienced, knowledgeable, talented, welcoming and beautiful couple. I feel so blessed to have been here (2020) Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) was started in 2014 as a local scheme in Lancashire and proved so popular and successful that is has now grown into a network of clubs across the whole country.

Courses, Workshops and Events

As adults, we readily accept that oranges contains lots of vitamin C, and bananas contains lots of potassium, and with the correct teaching and guidance, children will readily accept that chamomile is soothing to the nervous system, peppermint can help to settle the stomach and comfrey can help heal wounds and scars. Providing a good foundation in plant education and herbal medicine will stay with children for the rest of their lives and even though they may not choose to become professional herbalists, they will have a good basic understanding of herbs and hedgerow medicine which is a wonderful gift that they will one day be able to share with their own friends and family. Children are wonderful students, especially when it comes to herbs because they have no preconceived ideas of how a plant may work in the body or how it may be used for healing. It isn’t only fruit and vegetables that can help to keep us healthy – all plants, including herbs and weeds have importance and value in supporting our health. Cosmetics and medicinal preparations such as teas, tinctures, inhalations, baths, ointments, infused oils, creams, rubs, and syrups

This guide will help you to find and use all the available useful sources to help you get just what you need fast! Starting Your Search A practical 2 day workshop making teas, decoctions, infused oils, ointments, creams and other remedies.

As soon as I saw that Julie and Matthew Seal had written another book I really just had to have it! Just like their Hedgerow Medicine book, this teaches you how to make your own herbal treatments with common native plants. It explains what you need to do simply and clearly, so is great for the nervous beginner. The plants starring in this book have often long-forgotten, but still totally relevant, medicinal virtues. It is wonderful that these are being made known to a wider audience once again, so people can help themselves with nature's medicines just like our forebears did. ***
