Modern interpretations and usage [ edit ] The Sigil of Baphomet, the official insignia of the Church of Satan and LaVeyan Satanism, also used to symbolise Satanism. In the 1850’s Eliphas Levi included Baphomet in a two volume occult publication that was known as ‘ Dogma and the Rituals of High Magic.’ In this publication, he included a hand-drawn depiction of Baphomet that would become the defining image of the creature. His image depicted a humanoid creature with a goat’s had and women’s breasts. The Baphomet was also shown to have a large pair of wings, horns, and a pentagram on its forehead. Hand-drawn depiction of Baphomet The pentagram has long been associated with various magical and occult beliefs. Moreover, the pentagram has frequently represented mankind and the microcosm. Satanism, which reveres the accomplishments of humanity and encourages believers to embrace physical wants and desires. Satanists also equate the pentagram to "intellectual omnipotence and autocracy," as described by 19th-century occultist Eliphas Levi. Later in the 19th century, the name of Baphomet became further associated with the occult. Éliphas Lévi published Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie ("Dogma and Rituals of High Magic") as two volumes ( Dogme 1854, Rituel 1856), in which he included an image he had drawn himself, which he described as Baphomet and "The Sabbatic Goat", showing a winged humanoid goat with a pair of breasts and a torch on its head between its horns (see the illustration). This image has become the best-known representation of Baphomet. Lévi considered the Baphomet to be a depiction of the absolute in symbolic form and explicated in detail his symbolism in the drawing that served as the frontispiece: Levi, Eliphas (1896). Transcendental Magic: Its Doctrine and Ritual. Trans. Arthur Edward Waite. London: George Redway.

The Church of Satan decided on a point-down orientation. This allows them to place the goat-head within the figure. In addition, according to writers such as Levi, this was the "infernal" orientation, and thus seemed the appropriate orientation for Satanism. Finally, the point-down figure represents spirit subsumed by the four physical elements, rejecting the notion that the physical world is dirty and taboo and that the spirit should rise about it.
