This is the third DreamWorks Animation spin-off film to take place after the events of a main feature film (this film takes place after Shrek Forever After, unlike the first Puss in Boots film, which took place before Shrek 2); the first two being Penguins of Madagascar and Spirit Untamed. Turns out it's the eighth of his deaths ("I'm not a math guy"), as being a cat literally grants him nine lives. Despite the protests of the town doctor, Puss refuses to retire. That attitude soon changes once he encounters an ominous wolf (Wagner Moura) who seems obsessed with taking him down. During their first encounter, Puss is defeated and disarmed by the wolf. For the first time in his life, Puss is scared- he's no longer the "fearless hero" he proclaimed himself to be to his adoring fans. Death is just such a unique antagonist. Yes, his primary reason for wanting Puss dead is somewhat justified, but that in no way makes him sympathetic or entirely justified. He's allowed to be sadistic and relish in his pursuit of our hero ("This is gonna be fun."), but he does possess some level of respect for him. He's simultaneously very straightforward ("And I don't mean metaphorically, or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way. I'm death. Straight. Up.") and very unpredictable (his surprise appearances throughout the film between his first and second encounters with Puss). Most importantly, he's allowed to be scary in a way that other animation studios seem ironically quite scared of letting their big bads be.

This is also the second DreamWorks Animation sequel directed by Crawford after The Croods: A New Age. For me and many others, that's the mark of a good comic relief character. Yes, they can be funny, but that shouldn't be all they have to them. They have to be an actual character who cares about their friends and has a range of emotions, not just the funny ha-ha ones.
