About this deal

Released exactly a year after their debut, Meat Is Murder saw the band expand their scope both musically and lyrically. Dissatisfied with the production of The Smiths, Morrissey and Marr undertook production duties themselves (with Stephen Street in an engineering role) to ensure the album sounded exactly as they intended. Peak Morrissey:“But still I’d rather be famous/ Than righteous or holy, any day, any day, any day” 37. “Nowhere Fast”

Peak Morrissey:“You must suffer and cry for a longer time/ You just haven’t earned it yet, baby” 21. “Rubber Ring”

36. “Reel Around the Fountain”

After various re-recordings, the song was released as The Smiths’ first single in May 1983. Though it only reached a disappointing No.124 in the charts, it helped them establish a strong fanbase including John Peel who booked them for their first radio session. The Smiths released two singles compilations in 1987 – Louder Than Bombs is an American compilation that collects the band’s non-album singles and b-sides from 1983 to 1987. There’s some overlap with Hatful of Hollow, but non-album songs like ‘Panic’, ‘Shoplifters of the World Unite’, and the gentle ‘Half A Person’ are career highlights.

In 2006, Morrissey declared, "I would rather eat my own testicles than reform the Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian." [108] When asked why in another interview the same year, he responded, "I feel as if I've worked very hard since the demise of the Smiths and the others haven't, so why hand them attention that they haven't earned? We are not friends, we don't see each other. Why on earth would we be on a stage together?" [109] In a February 2009 interview on BBC Radio 2, he said, "People always ask me about reunions and I can't imagine why[...] the past seems like a distant place, and I'm pleased with that." [110] In 2002, Joyce said he was not interested in reforming as he felt the Smiths had run its course. [111] Morrissey and Marr – who were represented separately at the trial [80] – insisted that the royalty split had been explained to Rourke and Joyce, though they were no longer sure when. Additionally, this agreement was only discussed verbally and it was never legally written on paper, something Marr came to regret. He said in 2004 that although he had no regrets in breaking up the Smiths, he wished the band had signed legal documents "from the word go" to avoid the later financial disagreements. [82] As Marr's counsel, Robert Englehart, said, "Some 13 years on it is extremely difficult to pinpoint the moment when the 40:40:10:10 profit split came into being... But Morrissey and Marr acted throughout on the basis that they would be getting 40 percent each of the net profits from the Smiths' earnings." [83]

I just wanted to use the theme of complete loneliness,” he said. “It was important to me that there’d be something searingly poetic in it, in a lyrical sense, and yet jubilant at the same time.” On a personal level, the song was written at a transitional time for the band and was the first to feature Craig Gannon who had replaced Andy Rourke. Morrissey’s made a career out of poking at the bruising ennui of everyday life, but nowhere does that stasis sound so active as “Nowhere Fast.” Against Joyce’s locomotive drums, Morrissey yearns to muster the courage to hop that passing train, tell off the Queen, or live a fully realized life. In the meantime, he recounts his “if only”s and “I’d like to”s until he’s in a full-on existential tizzy that’s almost manic in its indecisiveness.” — T.C. a b c d e "The Smiths Uk charts albums". Featuring guitarist Johnny Marr’s intricate melodies and Morrissey’s sensitive and thoughtful lyrics, the pair were soon recognised as a dynamic songwriting partnership, with their eponymous debut album an instant classic containing some of their most beautiful, haunting and memorable work. While the slightly leaden production on The Smiths was its failing, and Meat Is Murder’s songs weren’t quite as strong, The Queen Is Dead is the album on which everything came together to create their masterpiece.
