About this deal

I loved this description of how Mr Norris frittered away his inheritance in the space of a couple of years, in the days of his early twenties when he didn’t know any better. Isherwood wrote another novel, A Meeting by the River (1967), about two brothers, but he gave up writing fiction and turned entirely to autobiography. Tra le eccentricità di Mr Norris andrebbe annoverata anche l’essere comunista, diretto proprio nella patria del nazismo (ma, che dire, anche Arthur Koestler era iscritto al partito comunista e corrisponden Kuno turns out to be gay, interested in a relationship with Bradshaw (he is rejected) and in reading English schoolboy books that feature only boys and no adults.

Many of his works are more like diaries than plot driven stories, but the journey is very enjoyable even if the destination isn't very exciting. Mr Jonathan Norris MBChB, FRCOphth, MSc (Oxon) has been the Lead Consultant for Oculoplastic / Eyelid surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford since 2011 and is the current Clinical Lead of the Oxford Eye Hospital. He is Chairman and Lead for Clinical Governance and Patient Safety at Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup as part of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust elective services. The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series. Looking back with full knowledge of what the Nazis did, it’s hard to acknowledge that a lot of people at the time would have embraced their less heinous policies, in the way a lot of people in the US embraced the values represented by Trump and a lot of people in the UK embraced the lies told by Cameron, Johnson and Gove before and during the EU Referendum. It was transformed into wonderful suits of clothes which he presented after a week or two, in disgust, to his valet; into oriental knick-knacks which somehow, when he got them back to his flat, turned out to be rusty old iron pots; into landscapes of the latest impressionist genius which by daylight next morning were childish daubs.

Knives were whipped out, blows were dealt with spiked rings, beer-mugs, chair-legs, or leaded clubs; bullets slashed the advertisements on the poster-columns, rebounded from the iron roofs of latrines. The character of Mr Norris was inspired by the memoirist, critic and internationalist, Gerald Hamilton, a friend of Isherwood’s from his Berlin days. While the social situation is depicted in some detail covering living conditions of both the poor as well as the rich, the political situation is always in the background - from where it sometimes pops up as the main story itself, especially in the second book. An oculoplastic surgeon understands the complex relationship between the eye and the surrounding structures, which is particularly important when undergoing treatment in this region. The story is rather long-winded and tame for most of this novel and it seems to be going nowhere for far too long in my humble opinion, riveting it is not.

Some sunning and general wear to dust jacket(in good condition), now in removable protective sleeve. Mr Norris’s “original” was Gerald Hamilton, described (by himself) as “the wickedest man in the world”, who served prison sentences for various offences and wrote several mutually contradictory autobiographies. Isherwood's decision had a more pragmatic reason as well; he had no desire to cause a scandal and feared that should he cause one his uncle, who was financially supporting him, would cut him off.His daily grooming regime is very precise and elaborate, not unlike that of a grande dame with lotions and face creams aplenty. In some ways though it seemed almost a little too elegant - there are times when it felt like there should be a greater sense of jeopardy, what with all those Nazis around. Mr Norris has worked as a Trustee for the Madagascan Organisation for Saving Sight (MOSS) and has taken part in two trips as a member of Overseas Partnering and Training Initiative (OPTIN).
