How can you tell? The example of patient suffering is in itself the most precious of all lessons to an impatient world.’”

Holmes decides to visit Sir James Walter, who was in charge of the papers. He has, however, died, apparently of a broken heart from the loss of his honour when the papers were stolen, according to his brother Colonel Valentine Walter. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875. Maps of the area from the late nineteenth century indicate that many of the buildings in the vicinity were narrow and deep like a typical terraced house. Whenever anyone asked me if they could use the illustration in a publication or game, I freely granted permission. This increased its exposure and made it famous all around the world.

For elements not found in the Strand Magazine illustrations I used reference photos of Victorian era items. There is a reading lamp (a.k.a. student lamp) near Holmes' chair which can direct light to a vacant chair nearby which appears in The Five Orange Pips. urn:lcp:classicillustrat0000doyl:lcpdf:e436596b-0222-4850-85b6-e3ed57686b52 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier classicillustrat0000doyl Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t3rv7r65x Invoice 1213 Isbn 0681401893 The magnet stories for summer days and winter nights, illustrations by D. H. Friston, London: Groombridge and sons Therefore, taking their cue from these old maps and photos some people believe that 221B Baker Street must have been a terraced house as well.

As the collection of stories grew, 221B Baker Street emerged as something truly fascinating and unlike any other dwelling in London. Holmes had described it in his characteristic understated manner as some nice rooms which he had found, and which were too much for his purse. The Bookman: A Review of Books and Life, vol. 75, p. 354, 1932, available online at books.google.com, accessed 6 December 2008 And it is the only depiction I know of that reconciles these challenges with the various descriptions of 221B Baker Street found in other stories.

If one could just ignore that story, then constructing a floor plan would be simple -- and most artists who have attempted to depict 221B Baker Street have done just that. The most obvious difference is the inclusion of the occupants, Holmes and Watson. Friston produced illustrations and artworks from the 1850s to the late 1880s. His professional career appears to have started by 1853, when he exhibited Mazeppa at the Royal Academy of Art. Friston exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art a total of 14 times between 1853 and 1869, though he was never elected a member of the Academy. He also exhibited at least six examples of his work at the British Institution (between 1854 and 1867). In their critical companion to the 1858 Royal Academy of Arts exhibition, the Council of Four record the presence of Friston's work A Rising Artist, in the West Room of the galleries, noting of Friston "Considerable character in the boy [1]In The Five Orange Pips there was apparently only one vacant chair for a visitor to sit in, so I made sure to limit the number of chairs to: The role these days tends to devote itself to his crippling psychological shortcomings, resulting in a string of drug-fueled, obsessive-compulsive Holmeses played by people like Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch, spun from the same cloth as Hugh Laurie's Gregory House.
